The “Contribution” selection is to help support the publication, web site, podcast, or other projects, most of which don’t have any advertising, to help them thrive and stay online. If you want to specify a specific use for your contribution, you can say so in Comments. Otherwise it will be applied according to my priorities.
A $10 minimum is set due to credit card (or, worse, Paypal) fees — less than that and too much goes to them.

Description
This is the way to enter an order for items not in the online “catalog” — such as advertising or one-time contributions. (For recurring contributions see this page.)
How the “Scholarship” Program Works: contributions marked for that go into a virtual fund, 100% of which (not even card processing fees are removed) go to that fund. When a Scholarship is given, it is paid for at the rate of $44 from the fund, which covers a one-year subscription. That doesn’t mean you have to contribute in multiples of $44: if you give $11, it pays for 1/4 of a one-year Scholarship. If you give $440, it pays for 10 Scholarships. More on that program.
